Interview Tips
As a student or graduate you might not always be sure how to handle an interview, or even know what one is like if its your first job. Below are a few interview tips you should keep in mind when being interviewed by an employer
Don’t be late! There is no worse way to start an interview. It is beneficial to be five to ten minutes early, even if this means you have to leave to go to your job interview ahead of time.
Be Prepared. Make sure you do your research about the company you intend to work for before you attend the interview. During the interview show that you’ve done your research by trying to relate your experience or what you know about the company when answering questions. Interviewers will often ask if you have any questions, this is a great time to highlight the research you have done as well as ask anything you didn’t find out through the discussion.
Be yourself. Speak clearly and try to relax as much as possible. Employers know that you are probably nervous, but still make sure that you don’t speak too fast, and always try to maintain eye contact. Employers already know your experience, they are meeting with you to get to know you as a person and see if your personality could fit in with their team.
First Impressions Count. Make sure you dress appropriately for the interview. Look professional (definitely no thongs, shorts or singlets), try to fit a couple of smiles, and don’t chew gum. Also make sure you greet your interviewer with a handshake.
Be Vocal. Don’t be afraid to ask your interviewer questions about the job and the company, make sure you answer questions with confidence, and don’t put down or discredit previous employers. Always remain positive.
Body Language. It is important that you don’t fiddle around in the interview, but rather stay focused. If you begin to drift off the employer may think you’re not that interested in the job.
